⏰ DOT Hours of Service — Quick Reference

Updated for current FMCSA regulations. Tap/click any rule for more details.

14-Hour Duty Limit

14 hrs
Max on-duty time after 10 off. Includes all work — not just driving.
💡 Once 14 hours start ticking, you can't drive after they expire — even if you have driving time left.
🛣️

11-Hour Driving Limit

11 hrs
Max driving time after 10 consecutive hours off.
💡 You must stop driving at 11 hours, even if within your 14-hour window.

30-Minute Break Rule

30 min
Required after 8 cumulative hours of driving. Off-duty or sleeper berth.
💡 Loading/unloading time won't count toward your break — must be truly off-duty or in the sleeper.
📅

60/70-Hour Weekly Limit

60 / 70 hrs
60 in 7 days (6-day ops) or 70 in 8 days (7-day ops).
💡 34-hour restart resets your 7/8-day clock. Must include two 1am-5am periods.
🔄

34-Hour Restart

34 hrs
Resets 7/8-day clock. Must include 2 periods of 1am-5am.
💡 Can only be used once per 168 hours (one week). Plan your reset days carefully.
🛌

Sleeper Berth Split

7/3 or 8/2
Split 10 hours: 7 in sleeper + 3 off-duty, or 8+2.
💡 The sleeper period pauses your 14-hour clock — extends your workday!

🚨 Critical Violations to Avoid

Getting caught with these can put you OUT OF SERVICE and result in fines up to $16,000:

  • Driving past 14-hour limit — Most common HOS violation
  • Falsifying logs — Can lead to 60-120 day suspension
  • No ELD or malfunctioning ELD — Must carry paper logs as backup
  • Driving more than 11 hours — Even by 5 minutes
  • Not taking 30-min break — Required after 8 hours driving
